Windows Vista (Chinese Version) Installation Procedure

The installation procedure is based on Windows Vista (Home Basic) English Version. The installation procedure is very similar for Windows XP.

Preparation

1. Disable UAC (User Account Control, Windows Vista only)
   • In Windows, press "Start" button. Type msconfig as like in the picture below
     
   • Click on the Tools tab. Scroll down till you find "Disable UAC" . Click on that link.
     
   • Press the Launch button. A CMD window will open. When the command is done, you can close the window.
   • Close MSCONFIG. You need to reboot the computer for changes to apply.

2. Install "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package" (for both Windows XP and Windows Vista). It is runtime components of Visual C++ Libraries required to run YLam Input method. Please download from Microsoft or from here (a local copy). Run the application.

Installation Procedure

1. If you want to install YLam TSF Input Method Simplified Chinese Version, please download and install ylam_input_tsf_simp.exe
   If you want to install YLam TSF Input Method Traditional Chinese Version, please download and install ylam_input_tsf_trad.exe.
   If you need both (for example, you need to send both Simp. and Trad. Chinese email), you can download and install both version of YLam TSF Input method.
2. After installation, if you can see the either "YLam (Trad. Chinese)" or "YLam (Simp. Chinese)" or both in the language bar of Windows Vista Desktop (see the figures below) then you can jump straight to Step 3.
        
   Otherwise you need to add YLam TSF Input method manually. Here are the steps:
   • Click Start > Control Panel
   • Click "Change Keyboard or other input methods" under "Clock, Language, and Region".
     Click "Change Keyboards".
     Click "Add"      
     
        
   • If you have installed YLam TSF input method Tradition Chinese Version, please add "YLam (Trad. Chinese)" under Chinese (Taiwan)
     If you have installed YLam TSF input method Simplified Chinese Version, please add "YLam (Simp. Chinese)" under Chinese (PRC)
   
   • Press "OK" a few times and quit Control Panel
   • You should be able to see "YLam TSF Input method" in the language bar.
3. Start "Internet Explorer", then start "YLam TSF Input Method" as shown below:
    
    Note: Sometimes although the language bar may be showing the current input method is "YLam TSF", the main windows of YLam TSF does not show. You can try to turn it on by hitting Shift + Space key. Please remember, YLam TSF Input method uses Shift + Space keys as the the on/off swich..

4. At this moment, the input method's dictionary is empty. You MUST load a dictionary before you can use it. Please press the "修" (Repair button). and start the "Phrase Editor", as shown below:
   There are two ways to load dictionary. If your network speed is high, please jump to Step 5, otherwise jump to Step 6.
5. Load the dictionary directly from Internet. Please choose the address of the dictionary as shown below:

   Then press "Load from Net" button. Wait for 2-3 minutes for the dictionary to load.
6. Load the dictionary from files. Please right click the appropriate link below, and choose "Save Target As ..." to save the dictionary as file.

   After downloading, click "Load From File" button in Phrase Editor. Choose the dictionary file you have just downloaded. Wait 2-3 minutes for loading the dictionary file.
7. That's it. You can start typing Chinese in other application. For example:
   • The Traditional Chinese Dictionary File is a mix of:
     • Hanyu Pinyin (mainland China)
     • English to Chinese dictionary
     • Cantonese Syllables
     • Cang-Jie / Simplified Cang-Jie input method
     Example:
     • For Cantonese Syllables, you can type "mingtin" for "明天", "pinggwo" for "蘋果".
     • For Cantonese Syllables of single character, please add "z" at the end. For example, "mingz" for "明",  "pingz" for "蘋".
     • For Telecode, you can use Keypad on the right hand part of the keyboard. For example: "2894" for "機".
     • For Hanyu Pinyin, example: 例如 "shurufa" for "輸入法", "aoyun" for "奧運"
     • For Cang-Jie, you first turn on CapsLock, then type "AAA" for "晶" for example..
     • For Simplifed Cang-Jie, you first tun on CapsLock, then type "AA" for "間", for example.
     • For Simplifed Cang-Jie Phrases, you first turn on CapsLock, then type "MFMW" for "瑪瑙", for example.
     • For English to Chinese, for example, "tomorrow" for "明天"
   • The Simplified chinese Dictionary File is a mix of:
     • Hanyu PinYin
     • English to Chinese dictionary
     • Wubi Input method
     Example:
     • For pinyin, you can type "nihaoma" for "你好吗"
     • For English to Chinese, you can type, "banana" for "香蕉".
     • For Wubi, you can type "MQAWXFV" (with CapsLock turned on) for "风花雪月". (The rule's is to the the first and the last character of the Wubi Code for each Chinese character).
     • That's all. This is the basic usage of YLam Input Method. Thank you for using this input method.
